Job Description

The Office for Students (OfS) regulates English higher education providers on behalf of all students. Our goals include helping students get into and succeed in higher education, ensuring students receive excellent information and guidance, making sure that students get a high-quality education that prepares them for the future, and protecting students' interests. We want to be driven by evidence so data and analysis will inform our effective, efficient and intelligent regulation in the student interest. We are seeking a number of assistant analysts to join our supportive, enthusiastic, and high performing Data, Foresight and Analysis Directorate (DFA). DFA has a long history of employing placement students, and about a quarter of the directorate's 70 staff were originally placement students themselves. Our analysts use a range of data science and analytics techniques, to illuminate trends, solve problems and provide evidence to help us support our world leading higher education providers. Roles in our analytics and data infrastructure teams will involve running and helping to maintain complex analytical processes to generate outputs that underpin a number of key regulatory functions. You will use SAS, SQL and in-house software to apply a range of analytical and statistical techniques. We operate flexibly within the analytics team so you may be expected to work on a range of projects, such as the Teaching Excellent and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF), the National Student Survey, and calculating funding allocations for providers. Roles in the foresight and insight team will conduct research and analysis to understand the higher education sector, including future challenges and opportunities. You will use a range of statistical, econometric and qualitative research techniques to provide evidence to support current and future regulatory functions. This includes helping answer questions such as 'who goes to higher education?' and 'how does higher education impact the lives of graduates?'. We are looking for candidates that have the ability to gain insight from large and complex data, develop and present clear and concise conclusions. You need to be a current student wishing to undertake a one-year placement as part of an undergraduate degree with a significant numerical or qualitative methods element. Our roles feature an opportunity to use a variety of technology and analytical programming, so a desire and willingness to learn is vital. OfS values knowledge sharing and development; we offer both external and internal training that covers SAS programming, Tableau, SQL, IT, and interpersonal skills. If you join us, you`ll be working at an organisation that values team work, innovation and creativity. Previous students have even gone on to develop a career with us following their studies. Benefits include 25 days' annual leave per year and a comprehensive staff development programme If you wish to apply, please send your CV together with a covering letter to the email address provided. The closing date for applications is 17 th November 2019
